WHAT'S NEW WITH CULTURES CLOTHING? 5-17-2010

What's up people...this is Alloyius McIlwaine AKA Kenny Lee Jetson AKA Captain Stargazer...coming to you with yet another new edition of Cultures Clothing Co: The Online Magazine!

Ok so I have some new artwork to present to you guys!  If you've been keeping up with me on Twitter, you might have seen the next couple of images, because I posted them all at various points during the week, but, for those who haven't, here you go!  New art by yours truly!

As usual, don't ask me what this first image is, because I dunno lol.  I was trying to tell a story using various characters, and I wanted to give them all different personalities, but don't ask me exactly what the story is...I'll leave that up for you to interpret.  I just get a pen and a piece of paper, and I draw whatever I'm feeling, or whatever images pop into my head.  So while I was drawing, I came up with 5 characters...a sentient throw-up graff "C", an alien with and attitude, and hedonistic king, a cool, suave graffiti can, and a foot soldier robot with a TV for a head.  Yes, I am very random haha.  Maybe I might make a comic strip out of these characters, and actually develop a fun little story...hmphhh...

Ok so this next sketch is just the Black & White foundations for a "Wildstyle" Graff piece.  I was trying something a little different.  I wanted to see what it would look like style-wise, if I really put an emphasis on the "CULT" part of "Cultures", and made the rest of the letters smaller.  It came out pretty interesting.  I'll be coloring it soon.

Ok so this last piece I just finished earlier today.  It's kind of like an ode to one of my style heroes, Cope2.  I just love the way that he does his throw-up letters, so I did this piece out of respect to him...you'll see the "After Cope2" on the "E" in "Cultures".

I have a LOT of pieces to get together for the Art Gallery section of the cancer benefit.  I have enough pieces...80+ to be exact...now I just have to start thinking about how they're going to be arranged hahaha!  Oh yeah, and of course I've been working on my orders...I got quite a few orders this week for this piece, which says "Cultures" in 9 different Languages.  It's being modeled by my very lovely friend Jamie:

It's on sale now in the shopping cart!  You can see an abbrieviated version of the shopping cart below...it'll connect you to the full one!  Outside of that, I'm still keeping busy getting ready for the Cancer Benefit. I'm still looking for any type of help that I can get! I'm still looking for more:

-Singers
-Dancers
-Bands

This Week's Interview Feature: 5-17-2010
AUBREY AQUINO

Alloyius
It's so very lovely to be speaking with you again Ms. Aquino...What have you been up to lately? You always have like a million projects going on haha anything new and exciting to speak of?
Aubrey
Right now I am still producing and pushing my passion project "On The Flipside".  I've been turning out episodes for more than a year now and it's exciting to see how far my "pet" project has come. So with that I am continually trying to figure out new ways to get it in front of more eyeballs and take it to the next level. With the summer approaching, I am trying to put my many projects into perspective and prioritize so I can figure out what's next and what's best for me. I have been tapped to do some voiceover for a popular video game, so we''ll see how that goes....can't tell you which one just yet, but it's by Activision.
Alloyius
I told you guys she was busy LOL! That's awesome! So how did you get started with On The Flipside TV? Was it one of those things where you always wanted to host and do a show, and you had been planning to do it for a while, or was it one of those spur of the moment things where you just got the idea one day, and made it happen? It's very very good...I told you before, I could listen to you talk about anything all day lol!

Aubrey
The idea for On The Flipside had always been in the back of my head. I had seen programs like NBA Inside Stuff or NFL Under the Helmet, and I liked the magazine format of the show. So, I guess I always wanted someone to hire me to do it, but the problem is no one else was doing it all in one show on a "national" level. I've been working in TV as a broadcaster for several years now and while there's a niche for Entertainment and Sports respectively, I saw an opportunity to combine the 2. Sure you hear about superstar athlete's and the not so good news about many of these guys in the pro's, but there are so many other guys who have great stories to share who are making positive contributions outside of their sport. And, at the end of the day they are normal people, so it's fun to see their "flipside" and I think fans love it because a lot of times they learn things about these "stars" that they didn't know and they're better able to relate. So basically one day, I woke up and was like I'm going to just do it...and it took off from there. I consulted my friends and family and pooled all my resources and contacts together and made it happen.
Alloyius
I love talking to positive, motivated people...it always makes you want to step your game up lol! So what was little Aubrey like? What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
Aubrey: When I was a little girl, I wanted to be EVERYTHING! I'm the eldest out of my siblings and was pretty much an only child for the first years of my life. I have always loved to dance, I started ballet at the age of 4, then I actually started ice skating when I was 6 (don't quote me on that)...if I just stuck with it, I could've had a gold medal by now! Then I ventured into gymnastics, girl scouts, etc...
Aubrey
On The Flipside of that I was very much a "Daddy's Girl," so I'd play catch with my Dad and the nerf football, and go to all his Saturday basketball League games too.
me: Haha I was like that too! I wanted to be everything...a doctor, and astronaut, a super hero, a scientist...it just depended on what day of the week it was lol. Your love for dance was how you got into cheerleading, correct? What are some of your favorite moments an experiences from doing cheerleading?

Aubrey
Yes, I've danced throughout my life and first got into cheerleading in jr. high and continued my dance/cheer career through high school. I took a break in college, but when the opportunity came about to audition for a pro team, I was hooked! Hands down the best part of my pro-team experience was meeting other women who shared my passion for dance and I could relate to post-school! Of course it was exciting to perform for thousands of fans and be part of such prestigious organizations, but it's the friendships that I've made which are everlasting.I don't miss the intense workouts and practice schedule, but I could probably use some of that to whip me into shape these days!
Alloyius
Haha your shape is incredibly lovely my dear . Speaking of which, I couldn't help but notice the amazing modeling shots that you have in your website's gallery...are you looking to do more photoshoots in the future? do you have any aspirations in the field of modeling, and are there any photographers, designers, projects or brands that you'd like to work with in the future?

Aubrey
Why thank you....actually any of the "modeling" I have done has been more because a photographer approached me about shooting some shots of me, or just for fun. I wouldn't mind taking more pictures, but I am SO hard on myself when I see the shots! That being said, I'll probably do them as needed, but I don't see too much of a future in it for me. I did love those "controversial" Miss USA pictures, I wouldn't mind shooting for that look and feel! At the end of the day though, I am always open and flattered, so that if someone wanted me to work with their brand or represent it with my photos, I'd surely consider it.
Alloyius
That's good to hear because I'd absolutely LOVE to do a photoshoot with you lol...we'll have to set that up soon! Ok time for a few fun questions...what are some of your favorite songs right now, and what are some of your favorite movies?
Aubrey
Favorite songs (besides any of the music my artists put out), I'm really digging Bruno Mars, love his voice and will listen to anything he sings. I definitely appreciate the ladies with the R&B like Alicia Keys and Melanie Fiona. However, HIP HOP is my favorite and I always have Clipse, Young Jeezy and Rick Ross on deck. Speaking of, that new track with Ross and and Neyo is FIRE!!! When it comes to movies, I'm sort of random, I like Shawshank Redemption, Pearl Harbor, Gladiator, Brown Sugar, Con Air, Sister Act 2... I have yet to see Avatar, but then again I have never watched The Matrix in its entirety. BTW, I've never been good at the "favorites list" or "best memory" type thing..
Alloyius
LOL I didn't know that Hip-Hop was our favorite...I have to put you on to some tracks that I recently fell in love with by Tonedeff, Panacea, Nujabes, the Strange Fruit Project, Tanya Morgan, Sound Providers, Macklemore, Blue Scholars, etc. etc. I love Hip-Hop haha! Avatar's a must watch...it's almost exactly like Fern Gully haha but it's good nonetheless...it's worth it for the visuals alone. I love the Matrix, and I quote Gladiator all the time randomly..."Are You Not ENTERTAINED?!?!" hahaha.  Ok if you were given 10 million dollars to do whatever with, how would you spend it?

Aubrey
10 Million Dollars..wow, that'd be so nice! I'm pretty much a very practical gal when it comes to money, I've never been a big spender, always stuck trying to be responsible. First and foremost, I'd pay off my debt, and then I'd make sure my parent's and siblings were good. Then, I might splurge on a few things for myself and travel to a few exotic locations and then save the rest I suppose, for that rainy day fund!
Alloyius
Hey that sounds good to me haha...last few questions...do you know any interesting facts about your nationailty/culture that you'd like to share with everyone?
Aubrey
Well, first we have to fix something...I'm a stickler for this... the PC way to ask the question is to use the word "ethnicity vs. nationality" Nationality refers to your nation of citizenship, so to answer that, I'm American, born in the USA...but I know you were referring to my cultural heritage/ethnicity/background, right?
Alloyius
That's my fault for being a lazy typer lol.  I usually type "Nationality/heritage/ethnicity/culture" because I was really asking for info about any of the above...so if you know a fun American culture fact, a fact about your personal lineage that was interesting, or a fact about your ethnicity that was interesting, either or would work!

Aubrey
I can tell you that I am related to the former President of the Philippines, Corazon Aquino. Her husband Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino is my Great Uncle and his assassination in the early 80's prompter the People Power revolution in the Philippines and really restored democracy back to the country. Pretty deep, huh? Now they have a national holiday there in his honor and Manila Int'l Airport has been named after him, as Ninoy Aquino Int'l.  On the lighter side, Filipino's and Filipino-American's love to sing, dance and play basketball!
Alloyius
You know it's funny I always wondered if you were somehow related to Corazon Aquino...small world lol...that's really interesting! Ok last two questions...if there was one thing that you could snap your fingers and change about the world what would it be, and what could we look forward to seeing from you in the future?

Aubrey
Only one thing? There's so much in this world that I wish could be changed...
Alloyius
That's what makes this question difficult lol
Aubrey
Lately I've been seeking out peace and harmony in my life because I believe that'd make things so much easier. So I'd change the world climate to "peace on earth." I know that sounds cliche, but with peace life can be so much more productive, and with peace comes love and love breeds happiness! In the future there's no telling exactly where I'll be! Hopefully on a TV near you...definitely look out for more "On The Flipside" and you can always check my blog at aubreyaquino.com to see what I'll be up to next. You never know what tomorrow may bring!
Alloyius
Awesome...thanks so much for doing the interview Aubrey...I'm really looking forward to seeing more from you in the future!
Aubrey
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to get to know me a little better.

Random With Rizz: 5-17-2010

As you all know when it comes to being active in the community and finding new ways to help organizations that help people, I am all about it! I look for opportunities to give back and I am always amazed at how many wonderful charitable organizations are active in the Tri-State area. Last night I had the pleasure of participating in a wonderful event!  On Wednesday May 19th, 2010 The Special Olympics Pennsylvania held their 15th Annual Hall of Fame Dinner.  The Special Olympics Pennsylvania is "Celebrating 40 Years of Transforming Lives"!

The evening started out with a beautiful reception and silent auction... that I missed almost completely because "The Man" had me hard at work... Booooo lol! Thankfully I got there in time to see two of my friends before they made their way to another event, and shortly after my arrival I was led to my table was and sat down.  The ambiance was great, the food was delicious, and it just so happens that I was placed at the cool table... Score! I met a woman named Joy and her husband and we had a ball!

The evening progressively kept getting better and the highlight of the evening was the introduction into The Hall of Fame for the honorees; Pat and Carlene Deon winners of The Chairman's Choice Award, Four Athletes; Tina Lamborn, Matthew T. Prosek, Edward Reynolds, John Steinour, and Two Volunteers; Richard T. Agretto and Grace Myers. All of the Honorees went above and beyond donating their time, energy, and love to the Special Olympics and it was moving to see them applauded for their efforts!  I was particularly touched by a woman named Loretta Claiborne. She has been participating in the Special Olympics Program from the very beginning... She fully dedicated herself to the program for the past 40 years, and she is still competing! Outside of her dedication and time I was touched by the fact that she spoke about how she just wanted to be apart of something and to belong, and the Special Olympics gave her the very thing she had been searching for, acceptance!

I have to give a special thanks to my friend Eric Cushing The Vice President of Development and Marketing for The Special Olympics PA for putting his time, energy, and efforts into such an amazing event and organization... I can't wait to become more active in future events!

Well that's it for this week's episode of random with Rizz thanks for reading Ladies and Gents... Until next time this is Rizz signing off good day!

This Week's "Cultures Facts": 5-17-2010
1) Even the use of the phrase "Spanish Language" is controversial, because in Spain many distinct languages are spoken including Catalan, Galician and Basque, and within each of those languages, even more "dialects". The Spanish spoken in most countries outside of Spain is Castilian, which is the predominant language inside of Spain as well. But a speaker of Catalan is likely to take issue with the use of the word "Spanish" to describe Castilian. After all, Catalan is as "Spanish" as Castilian is, so in many parts of Spain it is important to use the word castellano, Castilian, when refering to the language. Interestingly enough, throughout much of Latin America people will refer to the language they speak as castellano, rather than español, Spanish.

2) In many parts of the Spanish speaking world, indigenous influence has played an important role in influencing the collective consciousness of people in their respective regions. In addition to having a prominent influence on the culture and way of life of the inhabitants of these Spanish-speaking countries, the Spanish spoken is affected. Therefore, different countries and regions will speak with different accents and use different vocabulary from other words, often times words drawn directly from the languages spoken by the indigenous peoples. For instance, in Mexico the word for "avocado" is aguacate while in Chile the word palta is used. Both of these words are "Spanish" words, but are borrowed from the language of the indigenous people living in the respective regions, before Spanish speaking people immigrated.

3) Sushruta is regarded as the father of surgery. Over 2600 years ago Sushrata & his team conducted complicated surgeries like cataract, artificial limbs, cesareans, fractures, urinary stones and also plastic surgery and brain surgeries.

4) Algebra, trigonometry and calculus also orignated from India. Quadratic equations were used by Sridharacharya in the 11th century. The largest numbers the Greeks and the Romans used were 106 whereas Hindus used numbers as big as 10*53 ( i.e 10 to the power of 53 ) with specific names as early as 5000 B.C. during the Vedic period. Even today, the largest used number is Tera: 10*12( 10 to the power of 12 ).

5) The art of Navigation & Navigating was born in the river Sindh 6000 over years ago. The very word 'Navigation' is derived from the Sanskrit word NAVGATIH. The word navy is also derived from the Sanskrit word 'Nou'.

6) The World's First Granite Temple is the Brihadeswara temple at Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu. The shikhara is made from a single ' 80-tonne ' piece of granite. Also, this magnificient temple was built in just five years, (between 1004 AD and 1009 AD) during the reign of Rajaraja Chola.

7) The Ashanti developed a a woven cloth (Called Kente cloth) that is a symbol of prestige, and a visual representation of the history, the oral literature, religious beliefs and social values of Africa.  The Kente probably has its roots in weaving traditions in the 11th century. Often the cloth is given different names to suit the occasion and the wearer. For instance, a special Kente called 'One Man Cannot Rule A Country' was designed especially for Ghana's first President.

8) The Tuareg is known as 'the people of the veil' because the men wear a veil that conceals the whole face excluding their eyes. The Tuareg are generally found in Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The men start wearing a veil at the age of 25. They never remove this veil even amongst family members. The women however, are not veiled.

9) When a girl from the Sotho gets married, she carries a conical shaped beaded doll which is a symbol of fertility. She gives a name to this doll and this name is later transferred to her first born child.  Formerly known as Basuto, the Sotho are mountain people from the Maluti Range. They are generally on horseback.

10) Do you enjoy slurping while eating, but can’t do it when people (your family, friends, office staff, guests etc. etc.) are around?  Japan is the place for you to be in. Here, you are expected to slurp while having liquids such as soups. If you do not, it is considered that you do not like the food and the host may feel offended.
