George Carlin Quote

The bright orange Ford LTD
When I was a kid my family decided to move back to New Jersey from Miami. My brothers had the luxury of flying on Eastern Airlines while my Dad and Mom drove our bright orange Ford LTD up the coast. I went along for the ride and since it was the era before seatbelt laws I claimed the entire backseat. I must have been like 4 or 5 years old and to be honest I don’t remember much from the trip. I do remember my orange blanket, spilling condensed milk all over the backseat floor and having little green army men for entertainment.

The Open Road Within
I love driving. Nothing beats getting in the car for a long trip and just driving. No stops, other then for gas. Hitting that road and driving and driving mile after mile. It relaxes me.

I wonder who we are.
Sometimes I wonder what was on this stretch of land before they build the road I’m driving on. I also wonder about the people that live around the area. What do they do? Who are they? Who are we all, really?

When I finally do stop it amazes me how such little differences make such a big impact. Take for instance accents. When you hear a person speak it says so much about them. Who they are and where they come from. Just speak and people know you’re from the highway. I remember once when I was in Alabama, years ago, and this little kid in a deep southern accent said to his mother, “hey momma, he talks funny.” LOL, I thought to myself, “No kid, you’re the one that talks funny.”

Words are very unnecessary.
What I really love is driving in silence. Whenever I’m on a long drive (about once a month) I sometimes drive in total silence. I’ve heard from people that that’s impossible for them. I enjoy it thou. It gives me a real opportunity to go deep inside and see what my brain is thinking. Sometimes when you stop taking to yourself you hear some really amazing stuff come at you from your inner brain.

I go crazy in silence like anyone else. The pounding headache of wanting to hear something. I know, I’m with you there. Regardless, silence is almost a spiritual experience for me, while driving for an extended period of time.

The Idea for this site, OpenZine.com, came to me on such a long silent drive.

When it’s all quiet what does your mind say?

Stuck in traffic on US1 while the MetroRail passes by
Gasoline is cheap
I have a different view on gas prices. The higher it goes the happier I am. High prices mean people drive less. Less driving means less traffic!
No, really, thanks! I’ll walk…
It wasn’t an easy task here living in Miami but out of my own idiocy I decided that I didn’t need a car. I went over two years without one. I was in my mid 20s with a pretty good paying job. I wasn’t trying to save money or the environment or any other worthy cause. I was just fixated on the idea that I didn’t need it. I also went without TV for a year but that's another story...

Looking back I realize how stupid I must have looked. Sweating my ass off walking around. Walking to work, walking with groceries and more importantly walking alone. (FYI: chicks digg cars) Who in their right mind would choose not to have a car for any other reason then because they can?  Well in my mind that made sense.

What brought me the most joy of this self imposed no car fiasco was when I finally broke down and got a car it was freaking awesome!

I totally relate! I once travelled around Australia for a year and a half in my litte battered Sigma and driving those long open roads in nothing but silence and the anticipation of anything unexpected whilst feasting on the scenery of the red desert are some of my best memories ;-)

Kiki Sinatra, LOL!!! I`m the same about driving, I like silence sometimes. It`s peaceful. I`m picturing you walking around the streets of Miami, LOL!!! It`s true, chicks digg cars but, trust me, chicks also digg guys who follow their own path :) I need to hear this story about no TV for a year, lol.
