$35,000 ZARUM Painting Finds A Good Cause
A painting by Zarum titled ‘Lip To Lip’ from the new ‘LIP’ Series of paintings, has been donated by the artist to the Gerry and Nancy Pencer Brain Trust. The Gerry & Nancy Pencer Brain Tumor Centre is located in Toronto, Canada at the world-renowned Princess Margaret Hospital.

The Centre provides multidisciplinary care, treatment, support, and education for brain tumor patients and their families, and promotes brain tumor research in the hopes of one day finding a cure for brain cancer. All of this is made possible through private donations. All proceeds from the sale of the painting will benefit the Trust.

The LIP Series, the new series of works since Zarum’s return to Canada from almost a decade painting, exhibiting and selling paintings in Europe, is still in the making. However, the first of several works in the series can be viewed at: ZARUM LIPS SERIES

“Lip to Lip” is one of the works in an extraordinary new series of unique paintings, which have emerged from the easel of the reclusive painter ZARUM throughout this past winter.

ZARUM, an international artist, who only recently returned to work and live in Toronto after almost a decade in Europe, is well known for his vivid colors and the sensual approach that dominate his works. He has touched his audiences in Europe and around the Mediterranean with warm and powerful expressions of passion and intimacy in uncompromising openness and delicate discretion at the same time. The depth of his images and the empathy they radiate have left many an observer profoundly moved in a personal manner. We see parts of our sensitive inner world reflected and put into harmony as ZARUM captures his own and everybody else’s desires, dreams, passions, fears, memories, emotions and makes them gaze back at us from many of his wonderful pieces of fine art.

Facial features are a main component in ZARUMs creations, which almost exclusively revolve around the human body as showcase for the human soul, in a strikingly positive and optimistic air based on ZARUMs compassionate attitude to human nature. The most famous body of works by ZARUM is not surprisingly called the “Faces-Series”, a sequence of semi-abstract face compositions, produced until then in an unprecedented and to this day unmatched style and technique. It can be viewed together with all of the artists’ works on ZARUMs official web-site at www.zarum.net.

In his latest series ZARUM stays faithful to one of his favorite features, namely the Lips, as instruments of affection, love, pleasure, intimacy and lust, however he processes the subject in an entirely different fashion, whereby he achieves a new visual effect with the same eye-catching impact. He reduces the use of color to a minimum in order to create magic with his softly swung lines and projects harmony and elegance into his pictures. Like in the presented painting “Lip to Lip”, white on black silhouettes of human faces are crowned by bright red lips, which are never found as a single pair, but always in the company of at least one more pair of equally bright red lips.

The power of simplicity reveals itself in ZARUMs works. “Lip to Lip” expresses the joy of being side-by-side with a loved one, rejoicing in a dance of lip to lip, heart to heart, soul to soul and it radiates a spontaneous joy, born out of that same togetherness, even if it may just be a moment of looking into the stars and sharing a dream. The highly original and collectable painting is a wonderful exposition of bliss, pure and uncomplicated it puts an instant smile on the observers’ face and spreads optimism and cheerfulness, which will ultimately fill each room or home this painting will eventually decorate.

...what sets apart the artist who simply copies a style from that of one who takes a step forward from what influenced them is the ability to break through with their own style, with their originality, and this is exemplified in the works of Zarum. There is originality here that deserves notice and attention. However, like most things original it takes the audience a little time to focus and adjust themselves to something new. Zarum's works are not simple for the most part. There is a lot happening on the canvas in what may seem a simple picture at first. The artist is complex. His mind is fertile and always moving. His thoughts, feelings, desires, and emotions are all there to see. But you have to take the time to look for them. This is not someone who slaps paint on a canvas and calls it art. This is not paintings of landscapes, objects, or portraits. It is work of a deeper "thinking" mind.

And yet this is not an artist who rests on his laurels, who is content with his "style" and churns out "cookie cutter" works because he can. Zarum is an artist who pushes himself beyond what he has already created. He is searching. His is taking risks and stepping beyond his previous works. It is an artist sharing his growth and not afraid to leave behind his previous success. He is willing to take those risks and yet remain true to himself and by doing so remains fresh, remains original.

Latest ZARUM Painting March 2011
Latest ZARUM painting
Though ZARUM has a backlog of LIPS Series paintings to complete, the artist has taken a brief break from the LIPS series which he began in early 2010 to create this latest work.

ZARUM has created a work with depth and meaning in his latest work titled "To Understand a Woman".

In this painting, elements are going into and coming out of each other and are not clearly separated. It is not defined what starts where and ends where. In a lot of ZARUM's paintings one can divide different figures and elements pretty clearly. In this one there is a lot more interaction. Different elements are part of each other.

It looks a lot more "gutsy", coming from the "guts" rather then the head. It looks like ZARUM was able to put more feeling and less thought into it, which is more authentic and touching.

There is one central figure  which is the woman and she has a lot of faces. Then there is the other central element symbolizing her sexuality and everything around looks like a lot of action, excitement, but mainly questions and mystery, maybe even misunderstanding or shadow games or manipulations, as well as wondering and curiosity.

The painting does not show so much the woman herself, but the mind of someone trying too understand and make sense of her
